What does the job look like?

As the National Safety & Compliance Manager – Retail, you will provide strategic leadership across all Retail Transport and Warehouse sites, ensuring a consistent and proactive approach to safety and compliance. You’ll drive the development and implementation of safety and compliance strategies, lead key projects, and act as a trusted advisor to senior operational stakeholders, ensuring all incidents are managed in line with legislative and company requirements.

This role is pivotal in coaching, influencing, and mentoring National and State Managers to embed a culture of effective safety leadership. You’ll leverage your expertise in behavioural safety techniques and statutory requirements to drive best practices and continuous improvement across the business. Key areas:

  • Lead and mentor Safety & Compliance Managers, partnering with senior leaders to develop and execute the Safety, Health & Compliance (SH&C) strategy for the Retail business unit.
  • Develop and implement safety documentation for new business, monitor incident investigations and ensure timely reporting to Comcare and other authorities. Prepare and present safety statistics and KPIs to the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Lead serious incident investigations using a risk-based approach, facilitate 4Ds and STKY sessions, and ensure the business takes a proactive stance on risk identification and control.
  • Oversee and support lead auditors to ensure consistency in sub-contractor compliance, remuneration, and COR audits. Establish audit criteria for social governance and remuneration.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including customer representatives, transport providers, union delegates, and government agencies. Prepare and present customer reports as required.
  • Facilitate regular safety and compliance meetings, set annual KPI targets, and drive initiatives to improve safety performance and culture.

 

Are you the one?

You are a proactive and experienced safety leader known for your strong leadership of teams. You excel at guiding and motivating others to achieve shared safety and compliance goals within the transport, logistics, or supply chain sectors. Your ability to influence and mentor senior leaders sets you apart, as does your expertise in implementing strategic safety initiatives across multiple sites. You thrive in dynamic, high-pressure environments and possess a deep understanding of behavioural safety, compliance regulations, and risk management. You can demonstrate:

  • Proven experience as a WHS Manager in transport, logistics, or heavy vehicle industries.
  • Strong knowledge of NHVR, Chain of Responsibility (CoR), Mass Management, Load Restraint, and Fatigue Management regulations.
  • Certificate IV or Diploma in WHS (Certificate IV in Training and Assessing desirable).
  • Demonstrated experience in safety management system auditing and incident investigation.
  • Ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders including senior leaders, operational teams, customer
  • Strong communication and mentoring skills, with a focus on coaching and developing others to embed effective safety leadership and continuous improvement
